Shipston-On-Stour has three meetings of Alcoholics Anonymous.  The Step Meeting on a Friday at 1930 and its held at the St Edmunds CoE Church on Church Road. A Step meeting is where each week the group learns and discusses one of the 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous. The 12 steps are the method used to help alcoholics to recover from alcoholism.  The Sunday Step 11 Meeting also meets here and it starts at 1830.  There is another meeting on Tuesday which usually meets Ellen Badger Hospital at 1930.  However for the next three months starting on the 9/1/2018 the Tuesday Meeting will be meeting here at St Edmunds Church.

Formed 15thApril 2011

The first meeting at St Edmunds Church, Shipston took place on Friday, April 15th 2011.  It was formed with the help of Luke and Brian. The first secretary was Luke, Brian was treasurer and GSR.

The founder members and new members who decided to make this their home group agreed in group conscience to make the group a Step meeting starting at 7.30 pm and lasting for 90 minutes We arranged each week to get a member to share on the step we happen to be on that week having read that step around the room from the 12 by 12 book. We obviously started with step 1 and the following week step 2 until we reached step 12 then we would start again. If we had a newcomer in attendance we decided that step 1 should be read and shared upon that week. Some weeks later it was decided by the members who considered Shipston Friday as their home group to join SMIG. We are still one of the most northern groups belonging to SMIG.

During 2013 the meeting was in serious declined with membership very low. Desperate to keep the meeting going the three surviving members decided in group conscience to scrap the idea of someone especially being asked to share on the relevant step each week but still to read steps from the 12 by 12 and open the meeting to share on the step read or any other AA related matter. It was also decided to reduce the meeting to 60 minutes only.  The Secretary at the time was Brian, opening up Dee and teas/coffee Jane. Numbers have increased amazingly since the low period in 2013. We are still self-supporting and happy, with membership very healthy including AA’s travelling many miles from other areas to attend. Rent at present is being paid every 3 month in advance.
